How to cancel an order on eBay? (As a Buyer and Seller)
eBay's cancellation rules are asymmetric, and that is the source of most frustration with them. A buyer has a narrow window and no guarantee. A seller can cancel almost any time but pays for it in metrics. Knowing which side of that you are on tells you what is actually possible.
If you are the buyer
You can request a cancellation, but you cannot force one. eBay gives you a short window — generally one hour — during which the request is automatic. After that it becomes a request the seller may decline, particularly if the item has already been dispatched.
- Go to Purchase history in My eBay.
- Find the order and open More actions.
- Choose Cancel this order and give a reason.
- Submit, and watch for the seller's response.
If the option is missing, the order has moved past the point where a buyer can cancel. Message the seller directly and ask — many will agree if the parcel has not left.
If the seller hasn't shipped yet
The one-hour window is not the whole story. If the seller has not dispatched the item, a cancellation request is much more likely to succeed — even after the automatic window closes. Sellers are usually more willing to cancel before a label is printed, because the refund is simpler and there is no parcel to intercept.
If the seller refuses, or the item ships anyway
You are not out of options, they are just slower. Wait for delivery and open a return under Returns in your purchase history. Whether you pay return postage depends on the seller's stated policy and the reason: an item that arrived damaged or not as described is covered by eBay's Money Back Guarantee and the seller pays. Simply changing your mind usually means you pay.
If you are the seller
You can cancel before dispatch, and you should do it promptly rather than leave the buyer waiting. The reason you select matters more than sellers expect.
- Open Seller Hub or Sold in My eBay.
- Find the order and choose Cancel order.
- Select the reason, then confirm.
- The refund is issued automatically to the buyer's original payment method.
What a cancellation costs you
This is the part worth weighing before you cancel out of convenience.
- "Out of stock or damaged" counts as a seller-initiated cancellation and is recorded as a defect against your account. Enough of them affect your seller standing and your search placement.
- "Buyer asked to cancel" does not carry a defect — but only use it when it is true.
- Final value fees are credited back when an order is cancelled properly. Refunding outside eBay does not return them.
The practical advice for sellers is to keep inventory accurate rather than to rely on cancelling. A handful of out-of-stock cancellations does measurable damage to visibility.
How to cancel an item for sale on eBay
Cancelling an order and cancelling a live listing are different actions, and the latter is the one sellers mean when they ask about "cancelling an item for sale." If a listing is still active — no one has bought it — you can end it from Seller Hub or My eBay. Open the listing, choose End listing, and pick a reason such as an error in the listing or no longer available. If there are active bids at auction, ending the listing cancels those bids as well and can leave bidders unhappy, so it is worth doing only with cause.
If you want to remove a listing that has already received a sale, you cannot simply "cancel the item for sale" — you are now cancelling an order, and the steps under selling above apply.
Cancelling a bid or a Buy It Now
An auction bid is a commitment, not a reservation. You can retract one only for a narrow set of reasons — a clear typo in the amount, a listing changed substantially after you bid, or an unreachable seller — and only within the permitted window. Buyer's remorse is not among them. Sellers can also cancel individual bids at their discretion.
How long the refund takes
eBay releases the refund as soon as the cancellation completes, but the money appears on your side according to your payment provider. Card refunds commonly take a few working days; balance-funded payments are often faster. If it has been more than a week with no sign of it, open the order and check the refund status before contacting anyone — it usually shows exactly where the money is.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cancel after the item has shipped?
Not as a cancellation. Once tracking shows movement it becomes a return, with the postage responsibility set by the reason and the seller's policy.
Does cancelling affect a buyer's account?
Occasional cancellations are unremarkable. A pattern of them can lead eBay to restrict buying activity.
What if the seller never responds?
If a requested cancellation goes unanswered and the item does not arrive, open an item-not-received case after the estimated delivery date has passed. The Money Back Guarantee covers it.
