How to Buy More Storage on iPhone (and What You Are Actually Buying)
The thing to know first: you cannot add physical storage to an iPhone. The internal storage is fixed when the phone is manufactured, there is no memory-card slot, and no upgrade exists. A 128GB iPhone is a 128GB iPhone for life.
What you can buy is iCloud+, which is cloud storage. That is a different thing, and the distinction matters: buying iCloud+ does not, by itself, free up a single byte on the phone. It can free up space, but only once you change a setting as well. Both halves are below.

Plans replace each other; they do not stack. Moving from 200GB to 2TB gives you 2TB in total, not 2.2TB. This is worth stating because it is widely misreported.
From the 200GB plan upward you can share the storage with up to five family members through Family Sharing, and each person’s files stay private to them. One 200GB plan across a family is usually better value than several 50GB ones.
How to upgrade
- Open Settings and tap your name at the top.
- Tap iCloud, then Manage Account Storage.
- Tap Change Storage Plan.
- Pick a tier and tap Upgrade to iCloud+.
- Confirm with Face ID, Touch ID or your Apple Account password.
The new allowance is available immediately and billing is monthly, charged to whatever payment method your Apple Account uses. Apple does not offer an annual discount.
Downgrading uses the same screen. Do it carefully: if your data exceeds the smaller plan, files begin to be removed from iCloud. Apple keeps them in Recently Deleted for 30 days, but do not rely on that as a plan.
Making iCloud+ actually free up space on the phone
This is the step most people miss, and the reason so many buy storage and see no change.
Go to Settings → Apps → Photos and turn on iCloud Photos, then select Optimise iPhone Storage. Full-resolution originals move to iCloud and the phone keeps smaller versions, downloading the original only when you open or edit it. On a phone whose storage is mostly photos and video — which is most phones — this recovers the most space of anything you can do.
The trade-off is real: your originals now live in iCloud. Cancel the subscription later, or fall behind on payment, and you have a problem. Anything irreplaceable should also exist somewhere else.
Freeing space without paying anything
Start by finding out what is using the space: Settings → General → iPhone Storage. The list is ordered by size and Apple puts its own suggestions at the top.
- Offload unused apps. Removes the app but keeps its data and its icon; tapping it reinstalls. Turn on the automatic version in the same screen.
- Empty Recently Deleted in Photos. Deleted photos occupy space for 30 days. This alone often recovers several gigabytes.
- Delete downloaded video. Netflix, YouTube and Apple TV downloads are usually the largest single item after photos.
- Clear Safari data — Settings → Apps → Safari → Clear History and Website Data.
- Review Messages. Set Settings → Apps → Messages → Keep Messages to one year. Years of photo attachments add up quickly.
- Delete large attachments individually from the iPhone Storage screen’s Messages entry.
Alternatives to iCloud+
- An external drive. iPhone 15 and later have USB-C, so a standard SSD or flash drive connects directly and works through the Files app. Older iPhones need a Lightning drive or adapter. This is a one-off purchase rather than a subscription, and it is the only option here that gives you a physical copy.
- Google Photos, OneDrive or Dropbox. All offer free tiers and all can hold your photo library. Google One at 100GB is often cheaper than the equivalent Apple tier.
- A computer. Copy photos off to a Mac or PC and delete them from the phone. Free, and still the most reliable archive.
None of these free device space automatically the way Optimise iPhone Storage does — you have to move files off yourself.
Buying a phone with more storage
Since storage cannot be added later, this decision is made once. Apple charges a significant premium per tier, and for many people a smaller phone plus a 200GB iCloud+ plan costs less over the life of the device than the next storage tier up. If most of your storage is photos and video, that maths usually favours the subscription. If you carry large offline libraries — music, video, games — buy the bigger phone.
