How to Accept a Shared Album Invite on iPhone, Mac, PC, or Android (2026 Guide)
Someone invited you to an Apple Shared Album, but you can’t find where to join it? The right step depends on how the album was shared. Newer Shared Albums use a link. Older invitations may appear as a notification or inside the Photos app.
Here’s how to accept a Shared Album invite, find the album afterward, and fix the most common invitation problems.
How to accept a Shared Album invite on iPhone or iPad
If you received an album link
Open the link in the message or email you received, then tap Join. Depending on the owner’s sharing settings, you may need to request access, enter your email address, or sign in to your Apple Account.
This is the joining method Apple describes for Shared Albums created with iOS 27 or iPadOS 27. If you’re looking for a pending invitation instead, open Photos, tap Collections, then tap your Apple Account profile. Apple’s iPhone User Guide explains the current joining steps.
If you received a notification or an older invitation
- Tap the Shared Album notification, then tap Accept.
- If the notification is gone, open Photos and tap Collections.
- Look for the invitation at the top of Collections. You can also scroll to Shared Albums, tap Activity, and tap Accept beside the invitation.
You can check Notification Center, Photos, or iCloud Photos on the web for a pending invitation. Apple lists all three places to look.
Don’t see Shared Albums? On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings → your name → iCloud → Photos, then turn on Shared Albums. If it was off when the invitation was sent, ask the album owner to send the invite again. On iOS 27 or iPadOS 27, also make sure iCloud Photos is on. See Apple’s Shared Albums setup guide.
Where to find a Shared Album after you join
Open Photos → Collections → Shared Albums, then tap the album you want to view.
If you accepted the invitation but the album does not appear, check iCloud Photos and make sure your device is signed in to the Apple Account you used to join. The album may also need a moment to load over your internet connection.
How to accept a Shared Album invite on a Mac
For an invitation sent by email or text, open the invitation and follow its Subscribe or Join prompt.
You can also open Photos on your Mac, find Activity under Sharing in the sidebar, and click Accept beside a pending invitation. If you don’t see Sharing or Activity, expand that section in the sidebar. Albums you’ve joined appear under Shared Albums. Apple’s Photos for Mac guide shows these steps.
If the owner sent you a link to a newer Shared Album, open the link and select Join. You may be asked to sign in or request access.
How to accept a Shared Album invite on Windows or Android
For a newer album shared by link: Open the link in a current web browser and select Join. Follow any prompt to enter your email, sign in, or request the owner’s approval. Apple says people can join albums created in version 27 or later on non-Apple devices and contribute through the web, subject to the owner’s settings. See Apple’s Shared Albums guide.
For an older invitation tied to an Apple Account: Go to icloud.com/photos, sign in, and select Shared Albums in the sidebar. If the invitation appears, click Accept. Windows users can also view albums through the iCloud Shared Albums app after setting up iCloud for Windows.
For an older public website link: Open the link to view the album in your browser. A public website link allows viewing; it does not work like the newer link-based invitation for joining and contributing. If you need to add photos, ask the owner to invite you as a participant. Apple explains the older Public Website setting here.
Shared Album invite not showing up? Try these fixes
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm what the owner sent. A newer album may arrive as a link in a text or email rather than as a Photos notification. Search your messages and email for the sender’s name or the album name.
- Turn on Shared Albums. Go to Settings → your name → iCloud → Photos → Shared Albums. If you just enabled it, ask for a fresh invitation.
- Check Photos and iCloud.com. On iPhone or iPad, look in Collections, your account profile, and Shared Albums → Activity. You can also sign in at icloud.com/photos and check Shared Albums.
- Check your account and connection. Make sure you’re signed in to the intended Apple Account and that your device can reach iCloud. Ask the sender which email address they used for an older invitation.
- Update your device if you can. Someone using older software may need to update to participate fully in an album created or upgraded with version 27. Otherwise, try viewing it on iCloud.com.
- Ask the owner to send it again. This is also the fix if you declined an invitation by mistake. For a newer album, the owner can share its link again. For an older album, they can use Resend Invitation in the album’s participant settings. Apple provides steps for each software version.
If a link asks you to Send Request, do so and wait for the owner to approve it. If it says the album is no longer shared, contact the owner; they may have deleted the album or changed access.
Why can’t I add photos after joining?
Joining does not always give you permission to contribute. In newer Shared Albums, the owner can give a participant Can Add Photos access or limit them to Can View and Comment. Ask the owner to check your permission if the option to add photos is missing. Apple explains participant permissions here.
Your software version can matter, too. Apple says participants using version 26 or earlier may see an album created or upgraded with version 27 as read-only. Updating your device or using iCloud.com can restore the ability to interact with it. See Apple’s troubleshooting guidance.
Frequently asked questions
Can I accept a Shared Album invite without an iPhone?
Yes. Newer albums can be joined through a link on a non-Apple device. For an older invitation associated with your Apple Account, check Shared Albums at icloud.com/photos. What you can do in the album depends on its version and the owner’s permissions.
Do I need iCloud Photos turned on?
For iOS 27 or iPadOS 27, Apple says to turn on iCloud Photos as well as Shared Albums. If you use older software, check that Shared Albums is enabled and follow the invitation shown on your device. Apple’s setup instructions distinguish the versions.
What if I accidentally declined the invitation?
Ask the owner to invite you again. A declined invitation will not reappear simply because you reopen Photos.
Is a Shared Album the same as an iCloud Shared Photo Library?
No. If your invitation says Shared Library, use the Shared Library invitation instead: open it or go to Settings → Apps → Photos, then tap Shared Library Invitation and follow the setup steps. A Shared Library has different rules for contributing and managing photos. Apple has a separate guide for joining one.
Will I lose photos if I leave a Shared Album?
You’ll lose access to the album, so save any photos or videos you want beforehand. Items you have already saved to your own photo library remain there after you leave or the owner deletes the album. To save an item on iPhone, open it, tap Share, then tap Save Image or Save Video. Apple documents how saving works.
