How to Find an Instagram Account by Phone Number

The short answer: you cannot type a phone number into Instagram’s search bar and get an account. The only method that works is contact syncing — save the number in your phone’s contacts, let Instagram read your contact list, and it will surface any account linked to that number under suggestions.

It works often enough to be worth trying, and it fails often enough that you should know why before you start.

The three conditions

All three must be true, or nothing appears:

1. The number is saved in your phone’s contacts. Not typed into a search box — actually saved as a contact, with the correct country code.
2. They linked that number to their Instagram account. Plenty of accounts are email-only, and a number added years ago may since have been removed.
3. Their privacy settings allow discovery by phone number. This is a toggle they control, and privacy-minded users switch it off.

Any one of these failing produces the same result — no match — which is why the method feels unreliable. You cannot tell which condition failed.

The process

1. Save the number. In your phone’s contacts app, create a contact with the number in full international format, such as +1 555 123 4567. A missing country code is the most common reason for a silent failure.
2. Turn on contact syncing. In the Instagram app, go to Settings and privacy → Account → Contact syncing and switch Connect contacts on. Grant the contacts permission when your phone asks.
3. Wait a moment, then look. Open the search tab and go to Discover people. Accounts matched from your contact list are labelled From your contacts. The one you saved, if it matched, appears near the top.
4. Check suggestions too. Matched accounts also start appearing in “Suggested for you” across the app.

Syncing is not instant, and results can take a little while to populate. If nothing shows after a few minutes, toggling the setting off and on again forces a re-sync.

Turn it off afterwards

Contact syncing uploads your entire address book to Instagram, not just the one number you cared about. When you are finished, go back to Settings and privacy → Account → Contact syncing, switch Connect contacts off, and use the option in that same menu to delete your connected contacts. Switching the toggle off alone does not remove what was already uploaded.

This is a real consideration if the numbers in your phone belong to other people — which, of course, they all do.

When contact sync fails

• Try the number as a username. Some people use their number, or part of it, in their handle. Costs nothing to check.
• Search the number on other platforms. Facebook, WhatsApp and Telegram each have their own discovery rules, and a person unfindable on one is often findable on another. A WhatsApp profile photo can confirm an identity you then search for by name.
• Use the password-reset screen as a confirmation, not a search. Entering a number on Instagram’s reset page will indicate whether an account exists on it, and shows a heavily masked hint of the associated email or username. It will not give you the account. Do not go further than checking — attempting an actual reset on someone else’s account is account takeover.
• Search the number in a browser, in quotation marks. Numbers posted publicly on business pages, listings or directories often lead back to a linked profile.

What does not work

Paid “Instagram lookup” services. Sites offering to reverse a phone number into an Instagram profile for a fee are selling a search you can run for free, or nothing at all. There is no API that exposes this, so no third party has privileged access.

Anything promising results for private or protected accounts. Discovery settings are enforced by Instagram, not by the site you are on.

Stopping people finding you this way

The same route works in reverse. To close it, remove your phone number from Accounts Centre → Personal details if you do not need it, and review the discoverability options there. Note that keeping a number attached is genuinely useful for account recovery, so removing it is a trade-off rather than an obvious win — and turning off your own contact syncing does not stop other people’s syncing from matching you.
