How to Take a Screenshot on an HP Laptop

HP laptops run Windows, so screenshots work the same way they do on any Windows machine. What differs is the keyboard: HP puts Print Screen in different places across its ranges, sometimes shares it with another function, and on some models requires the Fn key to reach it. That is why the shortcut that works on a friend's laptop may appear to do nothing on yours.

The fastest method: Windows + Shift + S

This is the one worth learning. Press Windows + Shift + S and the screen dims with a small toolbar at the top. Choose a rectangular selection, a freeform shape, a single window, or the whole screen. The capture goes to your clipboard and a notification lets you open it for annotation and saving.

It works on every current HP laptop regardless of where Print Screen sits, which makes it the reliable default.

Print Screen, and its variations

The key is usually marked prt sc and sits on the top row, often sharing space with a function key.

• Print Screen — copies the whole screen to the clipboard. Nothing appears to happen; you then paste it somewhere.
• Alt + Print Screen — copies only the active window. Useful for a single dialog.
• Windows + Print Screen — saves the whole screen straight to a file. The screen dims briefly to confirm.
• Fn + Print Screen — needed on models where the top row defaults to media controls.

Where a clipboard screenshot actually goes

Plain Print Screen does not create a file. It puts the image on the clipboard, and it stays there until you paste it into something — Paint, Word, an email, a chat window. Open Paint, press Ctrl + V, and save as PNG for the cleanest result. This trips up more people than any other part of screenshotting on Windows.

Snipping Tool, for anything more than a grab

Open the Start menu and type Snipping Tool. It offers the same capture modes as the keyboard shortcut, plus two things the shortcut lacks: a delay timer for capturing menus that close when they lose focus, and screen recording for short clips. Captures open in an editor where you can crop, annotate and save directly.

When Print Screen does nothing

Work through these in order.

• Try Fn + Print Screen. On many HP models the top row is set to media keys by default, so the labelled function needs Fn.
• Check the F-key mode in BIOS. HP exposes an Action Keys Mode setting; turning it off makes the printed labels work without Fn.
• Close screen-capture software. Tools bundled with conferencing apps or graphics drivers can claim the key.
• Use Windows + Shift + S instead. It does not depend on that key existing at all.

Capturing a long web page

Windows has no built-in scrolling capture. The practical route is your browser's own developer tools — in Chrome or Edge, open the command menu with Ctrl + Shift + P and run the full-size screenshot command, which captures the entire page rather than the visible part.
