How to Deactivate and Reactivate an Instagram Account
Instagram offers two different exits and names them confusingly. Deactivating hides your account temporarily and is completely reversible. Deleting removes it permanently. Choosing the wrong one is not recoverable after the grace period, so it is worth being clear which you want before you start.
What deactivating actually does
- Your profile, posts, comments and likes are hidden, not deleted.
- Your username is held for you, so nobody else can take it.
- You disappear from other people's follower lists while deactivated.
- Direct messages you sent remain visible in other people's inboxes.
- Everything returns exactly as it was when you log back in.
That last point is the whole appeal: it is a pause, not a decision.
How to deactivate
Instagram moves this option around, and it has historically been easier to find on the web than in the app. If you cannot see it in the app, log in through a browser.
- Open your profile and go to Settings and privacy.
- Find Accounts Centre, then Personal details.
- Choose Account ownership and control, then Deactivation or deletion.
- Select the account, then choose Deactivate account.
- Give a reason, re-enter your password, and confirm.
Instagram limits how often you can deactivate — historically about once a week — so it is not a daily toggle.
How to reactivate
Simply log back in with your username and password. There is no separate reactivation step and no waiting period; the account returns immediately with its content, followers and settings intact.
If login fails, use the password reset link rather than assuming the account is gone. A forgotten password is far more common than an actual deletion.
Deleting instead
Deletion follows the same path but ends at Delete account. Instagram holds the account for a grace period — around 30 days — during which logging back in cancels the deletion. After that, the content is removed and the username is released, and neither can be recovered.
Download your data first. The request option lives in the same settings area and produces an archive of your photos, videos, messages and profile information. It takes time to prepare, so start it before you begin deleting anything.

Frequently asked questions
Can people see my profile while deactivated?
