Why clearing cache won't always speed up your devices

Clearing your cache is rarely the fix it's advertised as — and often makes things worse

Every few months, someone tells you to clear your cache to speed up your phone. It's the tech equivalent of turning it off and on again — except this one can cost you performance instead of restoring it. Here's what cache actually does, when clearing it genuinely helps, and how to avoid the buttons that wipe things you'll regret losing.

What a cache actually does

A cache is temporary storage for information that software expects to use again. The point is to avoid redoing work that's already been done once — fetching a file, decoding an image, querying a server. If the data is sitting close by, the second load is nearly instant.

The contents depend entirely on the app. A browser cache holds copies of images and other parts of a webpage so revisiting a site doesn't mean re-downloading everything. A music streaming app caches playlists you listen to frequently so playback starts immediately. A social media app may cache thumbnails and profile pictures from pages you've browsed recently.

Two things follow from this. First, a large cache isn't automatically evidence that something is wrong — an app you use heavily will accumulate a lot of reusable data, and that's the system working as intended. Second, there isn't one universal cache shared across your device. A browser cache, an individual app's cache, and system-level caches serve different purposes, and clearing one has nothing to do with the others.

Why clearing cache can backfire

Clearing your cache does not make a healthy phone faster — it makes it briefly slower. Deleting cached data removes the "shortcut" it provides, and that shortcut existed to save you time.

Google is explicit about the trade-off. In its guidance for Chrome, the company warns that some websites can seem slower after clearing cache since heavy content — images, scripts, stylesheets — has to load again from scratch. Android gets the same treatment: some apps may be slower the next time you open them after you wipe their cache.

The logic is simple. Caches exist to speed apps up, so removing them usually means a slightly slower next launch while they rebuild. And they rebuild fast — within minutes of normal use.

Clearing cache frees storage and can fix one misbehaving app. That's a legitimate reason to do it. But as routine maintenance on a phone that's working fine, it costs you performance and gives you nothing lasting in return.

When clearing cache actually helps

Clear cache only when cached data is the problem. Not before. Not "just in case." The fix works because you're removing a specific corrupted or stale file, not because you've performed some digital detox.

The clearest case is a video that won't play. If a cached video becomes corrupted, it won't load properly when you open it. Clearing the cache forces the app or browser to pull a fresh copy. That's a repair, not maintenance.

Browsers are the other common spot. Google lists website loading or formatting problems among the reasons to clear browser cache and cookies. When a site renders broken menus or old styling, it's usually your cached files arguing with the server's new ones.

On Android, if an app is misbehaving and provides a dedicated cache control, clearing that app's temporary data can fix it without touching anything else. This is the surgical option — and the one I actually use, because it doesn't log me out of every app at once.

Gaming consoles get this too. You can clear the system software cache on your PS5 using safe mode, which Sony recommends for system feature issues or performance drops.

The thread running through all of these: something specific stopped working, and the cache is the only likely culprit. Cache clearing makes the most sense as targeted troubleshooting, not routine maintenance. Skip this habit entirely unless you can point to the symptom.

Cache vs. cookies vs. app data

These three things do different jobs, and clearing the wrong one is how you lose something you wanted to keep. Clearing cache never touches your logins or saved data. Cookies are what remember you — cookies can preserve sign-ins and site preferences, while cached files are primarily reusable page resources.

The distinction shows up in the controls themselves. Chrome treats cached images and files separately from cookies, browsing history and other site information. Android makes the same split: Clear cache deletes temporary data, while Clear storage permanently deletes all app data — install files, accounts, settings, everything. On iPhone, Safari's Clear History and Website Data removes history, cache and cookies together, while website data can also be removed separately if you want to keep your browsing history.

Clearing cookies will have a bigger effect on how websites remember you than clearing cached files alone. Cache is disposable by design — it will not delete your photos. App data is the permanent stuff, and "Clear storage" means starting that app from zero.

Skip this section if you already know which button wipes your saved game and which one just frees space. Everyone else: the distinction matters the first time you pick wrong.

How to clear cache correctly by platform

Android and iOS handle this completely differently, and knowing which one you're on matters more than anything else. On Android, you clear cache per app via Settings › Apps › [app] › Storage › Clear cache. There's no safe "clear all caches" system button — and that's by design, because most caches don't need clearing.

The only thing to avoid is the neighbouring "Clear data" button, which does wipe an app's saved content and signs you out. Skip cache clearing entirely if you're not troubleshooting a specific misbehaving app.

iOS has no global cache-clear button at all. Apple deliberately manages app caches for you — the system trims them automatically when storage gets tight. For Safari specifically, clearing history and website data clears the cache. If an app is bloated beyond reason, you can offload it via Settings › General › iPhone Storage › [app] › Offload App, which clears the binary and rebuilds caches on reinstall while keeping your data.

If a full reset is what you're actually after, factory resetting a Samsung phone is a different procedure entirely.

Common myths about cache clearing

RAM boosters and one-tap speed-up apps do not actually work. A booster that force-closes apps often makes things slower, because the OS then has to cold-start each app again. There's no legitimate way to "add RAM" with a tap, and the dramatic "boost" animations are theatre.

What actually makes a phone faster: keeping comfortable free storage so the OS has working room, installing OS updates, maintaining battery health, and not running into genuine app bugs. When free space drops below roughly 10%, the OS loses the headroom it needs and the whole device slows. That's the threshold to watch, not the color of some app's animation.

Clearing cache itself is one of the safest things you can do, because by design a cache contains only rebuildable files. The harm isn't in the clearing — it's in the false promises wrapped around it. Apps that promise to "boost" your phone by clearing cache and "freeing RAM" are largely selling a feeling, not a result.

Skip the booster apps entirely. If your phone feels slow, free up storage, update the OS, and check battery health. Those are the levers that move.
