How to See Who Someone Recently Followed on Instagram
The short answer: you cannot. Instagram removed the Following Activity tab in 2019 — the feed that once showed you what accounts you follow had liked and followed — and nothing replaced it. There is no screen, setting or tool that returns a dated list of someone’s recent follows.
The related belief, that the top of someone’s following list is their newest follow, is also no longer true. That list is ordered by an algorithm now, not by date.
How the following list is actually ordered
When you open someone’s Following list, Instagram ranks it for you rather than showing it chronologically. The ordering leans on:
- Accounts you and they both follow — mutual connections get pushed to the top
- Accounts you interact with yourself
- How much the profile owner interacts with each account
- General popularity and relevance signals
Two people opening the same following list see different orders. That alone disproves the “newest at the top” theory, and it is worth knowing because a great deal of advice online still repeats it.
One narrow exception: on your own following list, Instagram offers a sort control with Date followed: Earliest and Latest. It applies only to your account, not to anyone else’s.
What you can still work out
Compare the list over time
The only reliable method, and it is manual. Screenshot the person’s following list today, then again in a week, and compare. New names are new follows. It works because it does not depend on ordering — only on presence. It is tedious, and it only tells you about changes after you started looking.
The follower count on their profile is a quicker version of the same signal: if the number they follow rises by three, there are three new accounts in there somewhere.
Watch for the visible signals
New follows often announce themselves without any list at all. A newly followed account starts appearing in the person’s story reactions, in comment threads, in tagged posts, or in the “Suggested for you” block on their profile. If someone follows a new account and immediately starts interacting with it, that is visible in the ordinary feed.
Check mutual-follow labels
Open an account you suspect and look for Followed by under its name. It lists people you follow who also follow that account. It confirms a connection, though it gives you no date.
What does not work
- Third-party “recent follows” trackers. No public Instagram API exposes follow events, so these tools have nothing to read. Those that show anything are comparing snapshots — the same manual method, run for you, at the price of your login. Handing Instagram credentials to one is how accounts get taken over, and it breaches Instagram’s terms, which is grounds for a ban.
- Anything claiming timestamps. Follow dates are not published anywhere, for anyone.
- The old Following Activity tab. Guides still describe tapping the heart icon and switching to Following. That tab has not existed for years.
- Second accounts. A new account sees exactly the same algorithmically ordered list. It changes nothing.
Your own recent follows
For your own account this is easy. Go to your profile, tap Following, then the sort control, and choose Date followed: Latest. Your most recent follows appear first.

Worth a moment’s thought
Most searches for this come from one of two places: curiosity about a friend, or anxiety about a partner. The first is harmless. The second rarely ends where people expect — the tab was removed in 2019 precisely because it was being used this way, and monitoring a partner’s follows tends to produce more suspicion than answers.
