Common Barriers and Challenges to Value Stream Mapping

Value stream mapping (VSM) is a well-loved tool for any business that needs it, but it is not a magic cure for every problem out there. There are common barriers and challenges to value stream mapping that need to be put on the table in plain sight for all to observe. When these barriers come up, they are capable of throwing the whole operation off course, therefore it is arguably valuable to understand what might lie ahead. 

Vague Aims and Agendas

A VSM with no agenda simply has no purpose at all. When the aim is not specific enough, there is too much scope for misleading, inaccurate, and defunct information which can make the entire endeavor absolutely pointless. There are, therefore, certain components that are not to be overlooked:

  • The value stream
  • Customers and customer requirements
  • The correlating business goals

The danger of not planning the above three points is that the whole value stream mapping course becomes lost in the wilderness, which leads to point two. 

Inaccessible and Confusing Format

While there is a fairly universal way to approach value stream mapping, it is sometimes the case that the delivery of the finished visual does not quite fit the memo. It might be difficult to interpret, or it might be poorly laid out with data feeling messy on the screen, and so on. Yet, all of these types of problems can be simply solved by utilizing an effective VSM template that will keep all of the projected insight in place and fully absorbable to any eyes looking upon it. This, combined with a powerful and precise plan is a great way to ensure that the data you produce is reliable and retains purpose. 

Corrupt and Invalid Data

What methods do you use for data collection? If this part of the picture is invalid and corrupt, there are minimal opportunities for concise projections. To make your data more relevant and in sync with current operations, it should come from a variety of places including surveys, past activity, targeted interviews, and even in-person missions. 

Team Mistrust and Hesitation

When the team is hesitating, the efficacy of a value stream map will always be compromised. The entire project participation must be on board and fully committed to the process in order for it to work. This is only possible when the workplace culture is supportive, engaging, and wholly focused on employee wellness. People who feel connected to their role and comfortable, confident, and assertive within their team are more likely to engage positively with the process and, therefore, not put the entire mapping system at risk of failure. 

Reaching too Far

Unrealistic goals and expectations are the downfall of many a business, so don’t let that be you. Ensure that every step you are working towards is completely realistic and in line with your current operation so that it is not reaching too far. 

Not Following Through

Finally, do not allow the process to be pointless by failing to follow through with the agenda! This happens all too often and puts the whole team’s efforts at risk. 

There are challenges to overcome with value stream mapping, but when it is used correctly, it can be an incredibly powerful tool.
